8 Attic Storage Tips

What’s up in your attic? Holiday decorations, antique furniture, or old yearbooks, perhaps?

Attics are wonderful assets in a home if you have a lot of stuff you don't need access to very often. However, attics also tend to get cluttered and disorganized when you start stashing them with too many odds and ends.

Our storage experts at Stop & Stor offer attic storage ideas to help you take back control of your attic space.

1. Swap Cardboard for Plastic

Cardboard boxes aren't durable enough for long-term attic storage. Instead, use plastic, air-tight bins with handles you can quickly grab and move around. Better yet, use transparent containers so that you can see the contents inside, and put labels on them for better organization.

2. Install Some Shelves

Shelves are excellent additions to attics because they allow you to quickly find what you're looking for without digging through boxes and bins. Ensure your shelves are durable enough to hold heavy attic items, and always place the heaviest items on the bottom shelves. Truss shelves are helpful for using overhead space to store lightweight items and keep floor spaces clear.

3. Hang Things Up

Make the most of your attic's vertical space! You can hang everything from holiday wreaths to sporting equipment and tools here. Grab a drill and install screw-in hooks to hang things that don't easily fit into storage containers. To store off-season clothes, hang a clothing rod on a slanted ceiling or roof line to save space in your household closets. It’s also possible to hang boxes from the ceiling when you run out of floor space and need to think vertically.

4. Install a Pegboard

If your attic has unfinished walls, a pegboard might be an excellent addition to store your tools, paintbrushes, paint rollers, and dustpans. You can customize your mounted pegboard by adding shelves and hooks to easily see and grab what you need when you start a new DIY project.

5. Organize by Seasons

Many people store holiday and seasonal décor in their attics until it's time to pull it out next year. Arrange your attic items accordingly so that you don't have to sift through Halloween decorations when you're looking for Easter baskets and colored plastic eggs. You can take your attic organization ideas to the next level by labeling your seasonal boxes with their contents for fewer future hassles.

6. Bring in a Clothing Rack

Set up a rolling or wall-mounted clothing rack to store your winter coats, outerwear, and seasonal clothing. It's much easier to find clothing items you want when they are hanging on a rack rather than digging through boxes and bins to complete a fashionable look at the last minute.

7. Keep Out Humidity, Cold, and Pests

Other essential considerations for attic storage are weather and pest protection. Attics are known for being humid, dusty, drafty, and full of bugs. Clean your attic space regularly to keep clutter under control and check for nesting materials. To plan ahead for all four seasons, choose storage containers that can handle temperature fluctuations. Avoid storing food in the attic that might attract pests, and cover up any holes or gaps in your attic's vents so that critters don't find their way inside.

8. Rent a Storage Unit

If your attic is overflowing with stuff and becoming more of a nuisance than an asset, consider renting a storage unit to hold some of your belongings.
